  • DK o Ligh Worsted.
  • Agujas US 7 (4,5 mm), US 8 (5,0 mm) o US 9 (5,5 mm) para el cuerpo.

Annie Haas | Demystifying Yoke Sweaters

Date: Saturday, 6 November

Time: 18 - 21 h (Barcelona Time)

Virtual classroom: Mohair

Workshop facilitator: Annie Hass

Technique: Knitting

Level: All levels

Language: English

Places: 20

Sponsor: Rowan

This workshop will teach you the basics of designing a top yoke jumper, so that you can design your own. In this class you will learn how to design and knit a top yoke jumper, using a motif you have already selected (this can be colourwork / openwork / braids).

We will discuss construction, how to calculate the correct number of stitches to get the desired measurements, and how and where to work short rounds across the back for a better fit

Required materials:

● Graph paper, paper and coloured pencils (or a colourwork motif already selected from a stitch dictionary or an image of the chart you wish to use).

● Several stitch markers (for the start of the round and to separate your motifs).

● Calculator.

● It is important to know which motif you want to use, to calculate the number of stitches for assembly.

Circular knitting needles according to the thickness of your yarn, for the size you want to use for the assembly (if you knit the collar first) and for the body of your jumper (the size you used for your swatch). Typically, the collar is knit on needles 1 to 3 sizes smaller than those used for the body of the jumper, depending on the desired look.

Yarn, which is sufficient for the entire jumper if your goal is to design and knit a jumper.

Professional advice on recommended yarn and needle:

  • DK or Ligh Worsted.
  • US 7 (4.5 mm), US 8 (5.0 mm) or US 9 (5.5 mm) needles for the body.
  • Two needle sizes less for the neck (if I like my sample with US 8 (5.0 mm) size needles for the body, I would also want US 6 (4.0 mm) size needles and an 8" / 20 cm cable for knitting the neck).
  • That thickness of yarn and needle size, especially for colourwork, will help you to make your jumper grow quickly.

Homework:

Sample, knit, block and measure, with the yarn and needles you want to knit your jumper with. This is important because we will need to know your measurement to accurately calculate the number of stitches for your desired size.

Required techniques:

Participants should know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl, increase, decrease and work short rounds (any technique) and be comfortable with colourwork (or openwork or cable knitting) for their yoke motif. Ideally, you should be familiar with knitting jumpers in the round.

Additional material will be provided.

The aim is that at the end of this workshop you will be confident designing and knitting a top-down yoke jumper.

How will the online workshops and talks work?

Barcelona Knits 2021 counts with a program of workshop and online talks of knitting and crocheting taught by well known national and international designers as well as by influencers of the world of wools.

From September, you will be able to see the program of online workshops and the workshop facilitators list and book your seat.

We will use Zoom as a online-class platform. You will only need a computer or a mobile device with a camera and a microphone. We will recommend you to test the quality of the connection, the schedules, the language in which they are taught, the level, and the required previous knowledge.

Once the workshop starts, you won’t be able to access it. That’s why we recommend you to join 10 minutes before and to make sure that your link works properly.
